“Do You Live Here?” | The Ultimate Outsider in the SB 54 Sanctuary State Debate

By Deborah Baber Savalla

I have spoken out against interfering with Federal immigration law at a number of city council meetings including a few in 2017 in Oxnard when that council was discussing and eventually voted 3-1 (with Mayor Flynn conveniently out of the country) to pass a resolution calling Oxnard a “Safe City”. I live in Port Hueneme and because I have been attending council meetings throughout Ventura County, some in other cities recognize me. Advocates for SB 54 are quick to point me out as an “outsider” having “no business” speaking before “their” city council! (I have also been called a racist and a terrorist in public meetings, but thankfully on Tuesday night at the Thousand Oaks City Council meeting I was merely an “outsider”.) Setting aside the willful attempt to squelch public debate about a state law that affects ALL Californians, I made the following observations when attending the council meeting.

A few SB 54 advocates sported “Indivisible Conejo” t-shirts. The national “Indivisible” gang, “…was established by a group of five former Democratic congressional staffers in the immediate aftermath of Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton … Upon its inception, Indivisible’s first order of business was to launch a website devoted to providing leftists and liberals with strategies for countering the “radical, racist, and sexist” objectives of President Trump. (Their) website features a tool kit for local Indivisible organizers, a daily calendar that lists national events and calls-to-action, and most importantly, the group’s signature publication, Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda. During December 2016 and January 2017, this Guide was downloaded more than 1 million times.”(1)

Comments by some SB 54 advocates strongly suggest they had read and do adhere to the “Practical Guide”. Their remarks included references to “your President” and/or “Trump’s racists agenda”.  Other SB 54 supporters repeated the tired “outsider” accusation. They were not going to let the FACTS of who was actually in attendance at the meeting interfere with THEIR attempt to discredit and shut down views contrary to theirs.

I decided to keep a tally of the speakers since I like FACTS and not “fake news”. The results are this…

  • 16 people supported SB 54.
  • 23 people opposed SB 54.
  • 2 people spoke on other subjects.
  • 4 people didn’t state where they lived including the law enforcement chaplain who spoke out AGAINST SB 54.
  • 1 person (me) was the ONLY so-called “outsider”.

One final thought about “outsiders”… Criminal illegal aliens are the ULTIMATE OUTSIDER! They operate OUTSIDE our laws and OUTSIDE of our values. They do not belong in our country and certainly not in our communities! Their law-breaking, often violent behavior is diametrically opposed to our American values, values which the majority of illegal aliens share! It is the reason many of them made the decision to break our law in the first place to get into our country but have since remained “law-abiding”.
