By Raven West

More than 1,500 Maritime Museum supporters and clam chowder enthusiasts were treated to a sampling of some of Ventura County restaurants best at the 3rd Annual Channel Islands Maritime Museum’s Chowderfest.

3rd Annual ChowderFest

Chowderfest is an annual collaborative fundraiser hosted by the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, IOBG (International Order of the Blue Gavel), and local Yacht Clubs to support the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, a non-profit which celebrates Five Centuries of Art that Sails and gives back to the community nearly every day of the year.

Ticket sales of this year’s sold-out event surpassed the previous year by 500 and nearly doubled the first year’s total of 800.

Attendees sampled more than a dozen different New England chowder recipes, and one Manhattan Style from La Dolce Vita. In addition, there were also delicious desserts, coffee, cold beer and wine, all of which were donated to help support the Museum.

Live music by the 8-piece live band “Kelly’s Lot & Friends” kept the crowd entertained all afternoon!

The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the winning Judges Choice and People’s Choice Awards by the Maritime Museum’s new Executive Director Peter Crabbe.

For the first time since the ChowerFest began, both awards went to the same restaurant; Sea Fresh Restaurant. Owner Tamara Sutton cooked up some 25 gallons of the award winning chowder to a very appreciative and hungry crowd.

In the People’s Choice category; 4th place went to first time participant The Greek Mediterranean Restaurant, 3rd place went to previous winner the Lookout, 2nd place went to another first-time participant RhumbLine.

Non-Chowder winner went to another first time participant, the River Ridge Golf Course, for their chicken chowder.

There was a four-way tie for the Judges Choice Honorable Mention; Kanaloa Seafood, The Greek Mediterranean Restaurant and Hook Line and Sinker

Another first time participant, Lynn Mikelatos, owner of The Greek remarked that ChowderFest “reminds me of the way things used to be. When people came out to these events to support the community and have a really great time. I was very impressed by the organization of the booths with so many tables and enough space for everyone to have a good sample of chowder!”

The popular event sells out quickly, so be sure to get your tickets early for next year’s Chowderfest 2018!
