    THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Young Artists Ensemble holds auditions for its Teen Summer Musical production of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein directed by Mayme Paul at the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, 403 West Hillcrest Drive.  Auditions are held by appointment only on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, with slots available at 9:00am and 1:00pm on both days.    Actors must prepare a 1 minute song and bring sheet music in their key.  An accompanist will be provided.  No a cappella or recorded accompaniment is allowed and contemporary musical theatre music is preferred. The audition will also include cold reading from the script and dancing and will last 3 hours and 45 minutes. 

    Callbacks will be held Tuesday, June 4 from 5-10pm.  Performances are July 26 – August 4, 2019 at the Newbury Park High School Performing Arts Center. All participants must be at least 13 years old and not yet 20 years old by August 4, 2019.  Character descriptions and an FAQ is available at www.yaeonline.com.    Rehearsals are held Monday-Friday 5:30-10:00 pm and Saturdays 9:00am-2:00pm.

    Orchestra auditions will be held Saturday, June 1 from 10am to 5pm at Hillcrest Center for the Arts and are available in 15 minute time slots.  Musicians are needed who play Violin, Reed 1 (alto flute, flute, piccolo, alto sax, clarinet), Reed 2 (clarinet, English horn, oboe, soprano sax, tenor sax), Reed 3 (baritone sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, clarinet, flute), Trumpet 1, Trumpet 2, Horn, Trombone, Bass, Percussion and Drum set.  Musicians can be no older than 19 years old. There is no participation fee for those selected for the orchestra; however, musicians and parents must attend a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, June 5 from 6:00 to 7:00.  Orchestra rehearsal times are posted on the web site. 

    Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

    Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s. Eventually, of course, the monster escapes and hilarity continuously abounds. – MTI.com.

    Director & Choreographer Mayme Paul has been fortunate to have a long career performing, teaching, directing and choreographing with over one hundred credits on her resume. She has performed on Broadway, on National Tours, and in Regional Theatre Productions, and has directed shows all over the United States.  Last summer, she directed YAE’s Teen Summer Musical, IN THE HEIGHTS.  Previously at YAE, she worked on productions of Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Cabaret and Chicago (for which she won Outstanding Director by The National Youth Arts Organization).  In addition to musicals, she has choreographed commercials and the hit TV show Northern Exposure.  She owned and operated a children’s theater company, Gypsy Productions.

    Young Artists Ensemble has received many accolades in the past 37 years including the Encore Statue Award from the City of Thousand Oaks for Excellence in the Arts, and Best Innovative Program 2011, Large District from the California Association of Recreation and Park Districts.  Most recently, it received 38 nominations and thirteen wins for their 2016-17 Productions including nine wins for the teen summer musical.
