After checking out available spaces in Oxnard, Ventura and Camarillo, they found the perfect location at 930 Flynn Road in Camarillo.
“We just fell in love with this spot,” Jen said. “It has the perfect ambiance and lots of room in the back for wine production.”
In the front is a patio-type setting, complete with a bright red umbrella, that also serves to let visitors driving by know the winery is open.
“Even though we can’t serve wine outside, it’s still a nice expansion of our space.”
The design of the tasting room was created by Jen, who wanted to bring a little bit of home to the winery. She found the perfect counters, couches, tables and even helped design the labels on the wine bottles which, she said, took more than two years to perfect.
The design features a photo of half a patio chair on front of the wine bottle with the other half on the back. Two bottles together complete the picture! Their signature red umbrella is situated above the name; “Back Patio Cellars” in a font that Jen chose.
When they started out, Frank used the Camarillo Custom Crush to bottle his wine. Now, all the wine is processed, bottle and labeled right on the premises!
Frank, the wine maker always liked the grapes from Paso Robles, but for the first year he decided to get the Syrah grapes from Lodi. He also goes to Santa Ynez for his Patio White (a blend of Grenache Blanc, Marssanne, Roussane and Viognier) and Patio Red (a Syrah, Grenach and Mouredre blend).
Other selections include a 2013 Petite Sirah, a 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2013 Cabernet Franc. Later this month, they will be releasing an Alexander Valley Sangiovese and a Reserve Cabernet from Lodi.
In 2016 Frank will be releasing an Old Vine Zinfandel, a Merlot and a Pinot Noir. They will also be forming their wine club at the start of the New Year.
From now until December 12, Back Patio Cellars will be collecting toys for the “Toys For Tots” program. Visitors who bring in an un-wrapped toy worth $15 or more will receive 2 for 1 wine tasting.
Also on December 12, Frank and Jen will be hosting a Holiday Open House with local craft artisans to go along with the Toys For Tots Drive.
