California Lutheran University will shine a spotlight on academic integrity during a conference in April.

The International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI) Southern California Regional Consortium spring conference, “From the Ground Up – Building an Integrity Culture,” will run from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 21. The event is open to the public as well as students, faculty and staff from high schools and colleges throughout the region.

Tricia Bertram Gallant and Christopher Lang with ICAI will be the keynote speakers. Gallant, past president of the ICAI Executive Board and director of the University of California, San Diego, Academic Integrity Office, is an internationally known expert on integrity and ethics in education. She wrote the 2008 book “Academic Integrity in the Twenty-First Century” and has spoken throughout the world and served as a consultant for high schools and colleges. Lang is a lawyer who serves as director of appeals, discipline and faculty grievances at the University of Toronto.

A presentation by Tony Pennay, chief learning officer with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Foundation, will broaden the scope of the conference to look at integrity through presidential and historical lenses.

Lecturer and academic adviser Loredana Carson and assistant professor and director of international student success MaryJo Shane from Cal Lutheran’s School of Management will give a presentation on improving academic integrity. Other speakers include University of San Diego students and representatives from Sheridan College in Canada, the Utah-based online college Western Governors University and California State University, Northridge.

Students from Cal Lutheran’s four-year-old President’s Council on Honor and Integrity will discuss the impact of their work to promote academic integrity on campus during a poster session and reception sponsored by Turnitin.com and the university’s Community Leaders Association. Carol Coman, an associate professor of business administration at Cal Lutheran who co-founded the SoCal Consortium of the ICAI and is the Santa Barbara Sub-Region representative, serves as a co-adviser for the club. Other poster presenters will include Cal Lutheran adjunct faculty member K.T. Connor, Pearson Library staff and a community college faculty member.

The ICAI was founded in 1992 to combat cheating, plagiarism and academic dishonesty.

The $65 registration fee includes meals. Reservations are requested by April 1. Go to http://bit.ly/ICAIfree to register. For additional information, contact Sarah Fischbach at [email protected] or 805-493-3371.
