Simi Valley Police Department – Incident Press Release

On Monday night, September 11th, at around 7:50 P.M. a Simi Valley police officer went in pursuit of a stolen vehicle in the area of Tierra Rejada Rd. and the Simi Valley city limits. The pursuing officer lost sight of the vehicle in the area of the 23 freeway and Tierra Rejada Rd. It was located a few moments later, having been crashed off of the southbound on ramp to the freeway. An area search by Simi Police Department officers and Ventura County Sheriff’s deputies was unsuccessful.

At the scene of the stolen vehicle crash, Sheriff’s deputies and Simi Valley officers conferred about the circumstances of the pursuit and learned the same vehicle was involved in a Burglary earlier during the evening in the city of Camarillo. During the Burglary investigation deputies were provided a photo of the suspect. When deputies showed the suspect’s photo to Simi Valley officers, they recognized the photo as that of Lawrence Huhne (39 yrs. old of Simi Valley). Huhne was also wanted in connection with a Grand Theft of wheels and tires that occurred during the early morning hours of September 9th in Simi Valley. The theft was witnessed by a citizen who phoned the police and provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle. An officer spotted the vehicle a short time later and Huhne fled from officers on foot. He was not located during an area search but the stolen property was recovered and Huhne’s vehicle was impounded.

Subsequent to the pursuit and area search on Monday night, the Sheriff’s Department issued a community information release for the residents in the area of the pursuit and crash depicting the suspect’s photo and asking the public to notify the Sheriff’s Department if they saw the suspect.

On Tuesday afternoon a Moorpark resident spotted the suspect and phoned the Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff’s deputies responded and the suspect was arrested. They notified the Simi Valley Police of the arre st and the officer from the pursuit on Monday night responded to Moorpark to meet with Sheriff’s Deputies.

Huhne was later booked into Ventura County Jail for numerous charges relating to the Burglary in Camarillo, the Grand Theft in Simi Valley on September 9th, the stolen vehicle and pursuit.

The successful resolution of this situation is a great example of the excellent working relationship and cooperation between the dedicated men and women of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and the Simi Valley Police Department.
