In December of 2017, the Camarillo Police Department Special Enforcement Detail (SED) began an investigation into illegal firearm possession. SED detectives worked closely with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Crime Analysis Unit and several other Sheriff investigative units to target criminal activity involving the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. One of the main focuses of this investigation was to identify and remove firearms and ammunition from criminals and people prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition due to previous criminal convictions.

During this four month operation, SED detectives conducted several investigations that resulted  in the seizure of eight rifles, including one AK-47 assault rifle, seven handguns, and over four hundred rounds of ammunition. In addition to the illegally possessed firearms, SED detectives seized four ounces of methamphetamine, varying amounts of heroin, cocaine and prescription medication possessed for the purpose of sales, stolen property, and recovered one stolen  vehicle. Investigators also seized about $2500 in U.S. currency that is believed to be the result of illegal activities. Seven people were arrested for various weapons related charges at locations throughout the city. These arrests included illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition by a prohibited person, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, assault on a peace officer, and possession of illegal drugs for the purpose of sales.  Five of the individuals arrested have  pending court dates and are facing varying sentences.
