Camarillo Interact Club Collects Books for Africa

The Rotary Interact Club of Camarillo wants to send 1000 books to Malawi, Africa.  The book drive is part of the African Library Project.  The books will be sent to the library of Our Lady of Wisdom Secondary School which serves 600 girls.

Adolfo Camarillo High School senior Katie Oliver is organizing the book drive.  Katie says “We have enough money to cover the shipping costs, but what we really need is more books”.  So far, the club has collected 250 books and more are needed by the June 28th shipping date.

The ideal book is at the 4th-8th grade reading level, lightly used with English language text.  All kinds of books are needed – science, math, history, geography, literature and also CDs.

Katie was motivated to begin the project when she saw how many books are discarded by high school students. Teachers assign books, they are purchased and read once, then often end up in the trash.  Katie says “I believe that education is a right, not a privilege, so recycling student’s old books seems to be a good way to provide needy African children with the education they deserve.”
