The Nurturing Hope Conference is for direct care workers and all who strengthen young people and families in their respective communities. The conference aims to explore, restore, and promote hope for those involved in strengthening families around the world. Keynote speakers and workshop presenters are coming from 14 different countries which gives the conference an unparalleled variety of cutting edge knowledge coming together in one place. Keynote speakers include: Dr. Jaiya John (USA), Heather Snell (Canada), Zeni Thumbadoo (South Africa), Lorraine Fox (USA), and Dr. Tuhinul Islam (Bangladesh). Workshop highlights include forensic psychologist Mark Freado from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and the co-authors of “Sisters of Pain: An Ethnography of Young Women in Care,” Leon Fulcher and Aliese Moran of South Africa, who will be sharing copies of their book for all in attendance.

The recent Thomas Fire that affected Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties called into question whether the conference would still be held. Attendees from around the globe watched the devastation from the fire and its impact on the community. Many asked, “What can we do?” Casa Pacifica’s response? “The best demonstration of support is showing up – just as you do every day in the lives of vulnerable young people.” It is estimated that the fiscal impact of the conference will be over $350,000 invested in local Ventura County businesses – including conference venue, lodging, transportation, and meals. Casa Pacifica CEO Dr. Steven Elson said of the conference, “We are excited to learn what other countries are doing in terms of youth work. It’s also an exciting opportunity to showcase Ventura County and bring some much needed revenue to local businesses on the heels of the devastating Thomas Fire.”
