Attention residents and parents of the Conejo Valley:

On February 27 the Newbury Park High School newspaper, order the Prowler, published an “educational” article on sex mores and practices of the high school students at NBHS, including minors.

The article was illustrated with a young female hand putting a condom on a banana and a male and female couple appearing to be helping each other undress.

The school was plastered with posters of the banana penis and condom.

The principal and the school paper advisor approved the publication and further consulted with the CVUSD Superintendent, Jeff Baarstad.  Baarstad, on the advice of counsel, approved the publication.

Reacting to a sense of betrayal by parents in the community and a scathing letter from several attorneys, citing California law calling for parental review of sex education and the legal right to opt out, Superintendent Baarstad apologized for approving the publication.

Since the damage is done, children have been harmed and parents have been offended, School Board member Mike Dunn, has placed a motion on the agenda for tonight, March 17th meeting of the school board, a motion calling for the paper to allow an opposing view to be published.  The attorney who wrote the protest letter and is familiar with California law has asked to be allowed to author the piece.

NPHSProwlerEmblemMany are confused and believe this motion and tonight’s meeting is about freedom of speech, it is not.

The scandal revolves around parental rights and the protection of minors from sexual harassment, however, Mikes motion is not about that.  Mike’s motion simply asks that the paper print an opposing point of view by the attorney who wrote the protest letter to Baarstad.

Mike asks that if you are coming, to be careful not to be drawn into a first amendment debate.  The motion is only about the school paper having the courtesy to allow the publication of an opposing point of view.  Tony Dolz will also be delivering a comment during the comment period regarding the parents legal right to opt-out.

The meeting starts at 5.45 PM (seating will be on short supply, come on time).
