Conservative AM 870 Panel:  “First 100 Days: Is America Great Again?”

Reagan Library event marks milestone

By Michael Hernandez

SIMI VALLEY—Salem Broadcasting KRLA 870 AM The Answer—conservative talk radio—sponsored a panel discussing the “First 100 Days:  Is America Great Again?” with Hugh Hewitt (moderator), Larry Elder (“The Sage from South Central”) and Ben Shapiro to a sold-out audience at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Wednesday.

The verdict:

  • Hugh Hewitt: “Neil Gorsuch makes it the best 100 days…a decision that will impact America for the next 30 years.”
  • Larry Elder: “Smashing success the first 100 days.  The biggest achievement is he stopped the left-wing agenda.  I have not seen this optimism in 10 years and even in the past 40 years.   What would have happened if we had Hillary?”
  • Ben Shapiro: “I am ambivalent.  I need more information.”

  • Ben Shapiro: “The majority of Americans, 55 percent want more government not smaller government.  (Trump) needs to cut entitlements and not expand spending with infrastructure…If he maintains a 35-40 percent approval rating then the incumbent party will lose seats in the House in 2018.  The window is closing and if he loses seats in the House …there will be a move to impeach him.  The other side hates him. We are bad people.”
  • Larry Elder: “The media has been at war with Republicans for years.”
  • Hugh Hewitt: “The country is under stress.  I don’t think we can live at this level of stress for four years…If the Democrats win the House and impeach Donald Trump…the Trump tribe will not go gently.  There will be fighting on the streets.”

What should the President do?

  • Hugh Hewitt: “The Mike Pence approach to politics.”
  • Ben Shapiro: “More of the State of the Union Address…here is my vision for America…good for all Americans.”
  • Larry Elder: “I voted against Obama twice.   What Obama did was disappoint people.”

Other Observations:

  • Ben Shapiro: “The white blue collar vote went 70 percent for Donald Trump.  This is a bigger percent than how Hispanics votied for Hillary…

“We need to rebuild our social fabric.”

  • Larry Elder: “The free lunch needs to stop…The country is drifting to the left partly because of Hollywood and the media.”

Advice to President Trump:

  • Larry Elder: “Just succeed.  Have a four percent GDP (gross domestic product).   Get taxes down.  March to deregulation.  Save and invest.”
  • Ben Shapiro: “Tax reform first.  We can save a trillion dollars…Let Congress do their job.”
  • Hugh Hewitt: We need more of him on matters of substance.  Like the 1 hour and 40 minutes press conference.”

Should President Trump be tweeting?

  • Hugh Hewitt: “If you want the President to continue his tweets stand up?  When we asked this in Detroit, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, the majority said they wanted him to do more tweeting.  In California, people want less tweeting.”

Other Comments:

  • Ben Shapiro: “We have to gauge the President by this opportunity.  We have a House majority, a Senate majority and the President. We blew it under President Bush.  I want him to be incredibly successful.   He needs to let his appointments govern from the executive branch.  Stop being distracted and get out of the way.
  • Larry Elder: “President Trump is not a fiscal or social conservative.  He is a populist.  Get taxes down.    Do the border.  Get the next Supreme Court justice like Gorsuch and the next one like Gorsuch.”

The Larry Elder show runs from 6-9 p.m. on AM870 (did his show live from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Wednesday).  Elder is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Michigan Law School.

The Hugh Hewitt Show runs from 3-6 a.m.   Hewitt graduated from Harvard College and attended the University of Michigan Law School.  He is a law professor at the University of Chapman School of Law and worked in many posts in President Ronald Reagan’s administration.   Hewitt did a book signing at the Reagan Library for his 2017 book: “The Fourth Way—the Conservative Playbook for a Lasting GOP Majority.”  In his book he outlines how the new president with the top leaders in Congress and with allies in 50 statehouses can use November’s stunning result to find a “Fourth Way” out of the gridlock and the destructive showdowns that have marked the past quarter century of American politics.  See link:
