Enrollment for Simi Valley Community Emergency Response Training “CERT” Academy is Going on Right Now

Do you feel like the 8.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico was a little too close for comfort? Did you watch the devastation caused by hurricanes Harvey and Irma? Are you and your family prepared to be on your own for 3-5 days (or more) following a catastrophic event like the ones we’ve just mentioned? Chances are you’re not prepared! Recent polls have shown that over 60% of the population in the United States isn’t prepared and they believe the government or “some other agency” will take care of them in the aftermath of a disaster. The truth is that YOU are responsible for you and your family’s needs following a disaster.

Participation in training, such as the Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Academy is a great way for you to learn how to become better prepared for earthquakes and all kinds of other emergencies. The goal of CERT is to provide residents with the most comprehensive preparedness training and teach useful skills through hands-on activities in an “Academy” format.

The Simi Valley CERT Academy meets one night a week for six-weeks beginning on Thursday, September 28, 2017 and ending on Thursday, November 2, 2017. The curriculum is presented by Ventura County Fire Department personnel and is held in Simi Valley at the City’s Emergency Operation Center. A Disaster Simulation will wrap-up the training on Saturday, November 4, 2017 and is followed by the presentation of certificates of completion to all CERT Graduates at the City Council meeting on Monday, November 13, 2017.

The CERT Academy is open for enrollment NOW. This will be the final academy offered in 2017. For more information about the City of Simi Valley CERT Academy and to enroll online, visit: www.simivalley.org/CERT or contact the City of Simi Valley Office of Emergency Services at (805) 583-6950.
