The California Lutheran University Wind Ensemble will present its annual spring concert on Friday, March 10.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Samuelson Chapel and will feature a wide variety of fascinating and entertaining works.

Modern pieces to be performed include “Tight Squeeze” by contemporary composer Alex Shapiro, who describes the work as “electroacoustic 12-tone techno Latin bebop,” and John Mackey’s aggressive “Lightning Field.” Traditional works include George Frideric Handel’s popular “Water Music Suite.” The performance will conclude with “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance.

The ensemble of about 35 members became an all-student group this fall. It continues under the direction of assistant professor of music Michael Hart, the director of bands at Cal Lutheran.

Hart, an assistant professor of music, teaches music theory, ear training and music education, and provides private lessons to all trombone, euphonium and tuba students. As a tubist, the Moorpark resident performs as a solo artist and frequently appears in chamber groups, symphonies and concert bands throughout Southern California. He also is active as an adjudicator, presenter and guest conductor throughout the state.

The concert is free, but donations will be accepted.

The chapel is located at 165 Chapel Lane in Thousand Oaks.
