Gold Coast Plays will present the musical GIFT RAP on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, December 18, 19 and 20 at 7:30 pm on Friday and 1:00 on Saturday and Sunday. The production features professional adult actors and will be presented at the Theatre on the Hill in the Hillcrest Center for the Arts, 403 Hillcrest Dr. in Thousand Oaks. GIFT RAP is written by Richard Hellesen with music by Disney Afternoon’s Michael Silversher, directed by Stephanie Wilson with musical direction and choreography by Billy Parish.

Music and Lyrics are by Grammy award winning composer Michael Silversher, also nominated for numerous Emmy’s for Winnie-the-Pooh, The Muppets and other Disney productions. Playwright Richard Hellesen has won numerous awards for his plays that are produced by professional companies around the country. The critically-acclaimed musical originated at South Coast Repertory and toured Southern California schools. This is the fifth time that The Conservatory has offered this as its traditional Holiday fare. “There are no references to Christmas or Hanukah, but since this play is about giving it’s perfect for this time of year,” says director Wilson.

Gold Coast Plays was founded in 1997 by Artistic Director Stephanie Wilson and Gold Coast Performing Arts Association Founder, Larry Janss. The company produced Equity Theatre productions at the Civic Arts Plaza, including A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, SWEENEY TODD and FOREVER PLAID. This production will feature a cast that includes Equity contract actors.
The action begins when three children are told they will receive the Perfect Gift at the New Super Mall. Each has a different idea of what form that gift might take. For “Vera” it is the latest fashion doll: THE PERFECT GIFT, THAT’S EASY FOR ME – I WANT BOPPSIE NUMBER FORTY-THREE. I’VE GOT ALL THE OTHER BOOPSIES EVER MADE – 42 BOOPSIES IN MY BOOPSIE PARADE.

For bookworm, “Chuck” it is a wonderful adventure: THE PERFECT GIFT COULD BE LOTS OF THINGS – STORIES OF PIRATES OR GYPSY KINGS. A HIGH ADVENTURE BEYOND COMPARE – SOME KIND OF STORY THAT I CAN SHARE.

And for loner “Dave” it is something – anything – that would give his life a meaning or a value that it never quite seems to have: THE PERFECT GIFT, WHAT A MYSTERY – I’VE NO IDEA WHAT THAT MIGHT BE. THERE’S NOTHING SPECIAL THAT I WANT TODAY – WHATEVER I GET WILL PROB’LY BE OK.

In the end, the trio learn that a gift can be something you have, something you know, or something you are.
