KCLU Radio is inviting the public to participate in a community conversation about the power of the presidency at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum on Thursday, April 20.

“A Nation Engaged: Power and the Presidency” will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the library in Simi Valley.

The free event will begin with a panel discussion featuring National Public Radio correspondent Wade Goodwyn; Hoover Institution research fellow Peter M. Robinson, who wrote President Ronald Reagan’s historic Berlin Wall address; and historian Craig Shirley. After the panel discussion, KCLU News Director Lance Orozco will lead a question-and-answer session with the audience.

The discussion will focus on the question “How powerful should any American president be?” Participants will look at the roles of the legislature, courts and media in providing a check on the power of the president. They will consider whether a president elected to disrupt Washington can actually do so.

KCLU, a community service of California Lutheran University, and the Reagan Library hope to bring together an audience of about 600 people from across the political spectrum.

The event is part of “A Nation Engaged,” a collaborative project between NPR and its member stations encouraging a national conversation about important questions facing the country. The series started during the 2016 election season and has continued into Donald Trump’s presidency. It uses the national reach of NPR and the local roots of its member stations to keep the conversation going among not only their regular listeners, but also community members they don’t normally reach during this important phase in the country’s history.

NPR stations are presenting four “Nation Engaged: Power and the Presidency” events at presidential libraries. The others will be held the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in Iowa and the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Missouri.

Guests and highlights from the four community events will be presented to a national audience during “On Point,” the national NPR call-in show hosted by Tom Ashbrook. The program is scheduled to air at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, on KCLU on 88.3 FM in Ventura County, 1340 AM and 102.3 FM in Santa Barbara, 89.7 FM in and near Santa Maria and Lompoc, 92.1 in San Luis Obispo and online at KCLU.org.
