A summer blood drive, looking for Heroes

Event Details

SIMI VALLEY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)  in conjunction with United Blood Services (UBS)  will host its 12th year running summer blood drive on Tuesday July 18, 2017.  The drive will be 3:00 pm -7:30 p.m. at 480 Sinaloa Road, Simi Valley, Ca 93063.  Easy sign up can be found online at http://www.blood4life.org using sponsor code 8043 where reward points are given,  and can be redeemed for gifts.

“We are especially in need of O Negative donors this drive,” States Cherie Whitaker, LDS Church, Public Affairs Coordinator” but we will take everyone.  We also offer the opportunity for Double Blood Donors where by the plasma is returned, taking about 40 minutes, but less chance of it effecting you.”

Historically, the reserve of blood supply in the U.S. is lowest during the summer months sometimes critically low. Donors are less likely to take the time to give blood during the busy vacation season, or during hot weather.  That does not stop the massive need for hospitals who need a daily supply for emergency rooms with gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding from certain medications who require blood from an outside source. The same is true for car accident victims who have internal injuries. Cancer patients and those who are chronically anemic often need blood, without which they can experience critical consequences.   Yet blood supply is something people tend to take for granted, the need for blood is constant.  Hospitals  have the lifesaving blood they need only because people take the time to donate and because organizations like United Blood Services are constantly at work behind the scenes to collect, process and distribute those blood donations

You can donate whole blood every 56 days. If you’re healthy, your body very quickly replenishes the small amount of blood you lose as a result of your donation. Youth 16 and over allowed (16 year old age need ID and parents permission).   Picture ID required on all donors. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health to donate.   During your appointment, a nurse will check your temperature, cholesterol, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin level to further ensure that you can safely donate.  You are asked to drink plenty of water and have a full meal before you donate.

All donors will be treated to a special Sub Zero Ice Cream treat offered by the local business in Simi Valley at the Target shopping center on Madera & L.A. Ave.   Sub Zero Ice Cream uses the science of cryogenics to freeze your ice cream instantly before your eyes!  You really do have it your way, without all the chemicals.  They offer soy, almond and coconut milk, dairy and non dairy mixtures with a multitude of flavors and additives.  Other Valentine chocolate delectable’s are offered as a treat for “saving a life” with a Blood Donation.
