Fire at Cypress Elementary School in Newbury Park – 12 Year Old Suspected of arson

On June 11, 2018, at about 7:09 a.m., the Ventura County Fire Department received a call of a fire alarm sounding at Cypress Elementary School in the 4200 block of Kimber Drive in Thousand Oaks. Fire Department personnel responded and observed smoke coming from the roof of the auditorium. As the fire was being extinguished, and due to the suspicious nature of the fire, firefighters requested the assistance of deputies and school resource officers from the Thousand Oaks Police Department as well as arson investigators. The fire was determined to  be caused by arson. A male juvenile was later located and arrested for felony arson.

Arson investigators with both the Ventura County Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office responded to the location and conducted an investigation. A 6 foot by 6 foot section of the school auditorium roof was damaged by the fire. The total damage caused by the fire is estimated to be in excess of $10,000.

After further investigation, a male juvenile was identified as a suspect and was located. The juvenile was arrested and taken to the Thousand Oaks Patrol Station. The juvenile was released on a citation to a parent.
