First Annual Student Art Show to be held at Museum of Ventura County

VUSD will highlight student talent in its exhibit at the Museum

VENTURA, Calif.– The first annual Ventura Unified School District Student Art Show will be held at the Museum of Ventura County, 100 E. Main Street, Ventura, beginning with a fundraising event April 19 and opening to the public April 21. Through the efforts of the Ventura Arts Collaborative, a cooperative program of VUSD, the City of Ventura and the Ventura Education Partnership, the juried show will highlight elementary, middle and high school student artists. In total, over 50 works by high school students will be selected from hundreds of submitted pieces – including watercolors, photography, acrylic paintings, mixed media and pencil drawings.

“Ventura is a city where art and artists are celebrated and welcomed. This wonderful collaboration between the school district, the city, a community non-profit and the museum is a direct result of our community’s commitment to the arts.” said Elena Brokaw, Barbara Barnard Smith executive director, Museum of Ventura County. “We are proud to be a part of this new annual tradition.”

Ventura public schools offer a broad range of art education, beginning in elementary school with curriculum-aligned art instruction for all students. This continues into middle and high school, where students are able to explore a variety of artistic mediums. Students at Buena, Ventura and Foothill high schools are able to study different artistic styles, art history and contemporary and classical artists, as well as ceramics and digital photography.

“Preserving and supporting a diverse array of educational opportunities is very important to us as a school district. This is nowhere more evident than in our continued support of arts education for all students,” said Sabrena Rodriguez, VUSD board member and longtime Arts Collaborative member.

There will be a VIP reception for visual arts supporters from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a $25 ticketed fundraising event, 6:30 to 8 p.m., April 19, where student awards will be presented at 7 p.m. All proceeds from this event will go to support VUSD’s art programs.

The art show opens to the public, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 21. Admission is free and there is ample free parking. In addition to viewing artwork, student musicians will be performing throughout the day and local food trucks will be on site. The artwork will remain on display through May 6.
