Grounded trawler Day Island to be broken up and removed

by George Miller

Last we heard, the Day Island had not broken up and is still being pounded by surf on the beach, but not as large. It has to be the most photographed boat of the year. Local photographer/artist Jim Englund of Port Hueneme took this photo below, on his high-end Canon digital camera with special settings, then worked his post processing magic via computer and sent it to us for publication.

Friends on the scene were told by two people who said they knew a crew member that it was the new owner’s maiden voyage and that the craft, which looks to be about 100 tons. wasn’t insured. We hope that is untrue gossip.

Pam Schlotter of Oxnard told me she saw a number of large trash containers lined up on the beach, presumably to haul away material- and supplied pictures to prove it (photo below).
