Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum Distinguished Speakers:
Author, Speaker and Historian, Cherie Brant
speaking about The History of Market Street
at the Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum 220 Market Street
    on August 5, 2017 at 11:00AM.

It was way back in June, 1872 when Thomas Bard platted the town of Hueneme. Did you know he borrowed the idea of creating a town center with streets forming a diamond from his home town of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania? You can also see that historic Market Street, which Bard laid out on the diagonal, funnels traffic directly to his Hueneme Wharf.

Cherie Brant is a writer, speaker and historian who enjoys learning about Ventura County history. She has volunteered at the Museum of Ventura County for almost 20 years and currently is vice president of the Docent Volunteer Council.

She is a prolific author of local history. Her books include Legends of Ventura County, Historic Railroads of Ventura County, Keys to the County: Touring Historic Ventura County, The Battle for Camarillo Airport, and Shifting Sands: The Early Years of Channel Islands Harbor.

She has also published two museum articles: Devotees of the Wheel: Bicycling Through Ventura County History and Impossible Views: Bird’s-Eye Views of Ventura.

In addition, Ms. Brant penned a weekly column in various Ventura County newspapers, and was a regular contributor to Central Coast Farm & Ranch magazine (formerly The Broadcaster), published by the Ventura County Farm Bureau.

She resides in Ventura with her husband, John, whose family lived in Port Hueneme for many years. They enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, and volunteering in the community.
