Local musicians host new CD party on its release date

Teresa Russell & CocoBilli rock the house

By George Miller

Local singer Teresa Russell is an institution. She’s everywhere- at clubs, restaurants, concerts-in-the-park, music festivals, charity events, or wherever. She’s versatile, too- blues, rock, jazz, Zydeco and more.

Her collaboration with “CocoBilli” led to numerous gigs and new songs- and now The Blues is Real” – another CD album (cover depicted below).

On Sunday, July 29, the group went to some trouble to stage a CD release party for local fans and the public at the harbor-front Channel Islands Yacht Club in Oxnard. Not only did they play some new, homegrown material from the album and old standards, but they fed us, too. It was a very festive, enthusiastic crowd and one could tell that a lot of fans were there.

Considering that this event was competing against the heavily-promoted Salsa Festival, Concert at the Harbor, A Taste of Camarillo and more events today, the SRO (Standing Room Only) enthusiastic crowd in the main ballroom overlooking Channel Islands Harbor was a pleasant surprise. The CD’s were selling like hotcakes and the tip jar for this FREE event was doing OK.

I was listening to The Blues is Real CD to get in the mood to write this article and must say that it was well worth the investment. These are all well-executed, original songs, written by Teresa Russell and William Breland (Billi).
Today’s party music at the yacht club was performed by Teresa Russell, (vocals/acoustic guitar), Coco Russell (drums/percussion) and “Dr. Billi” (guitar), whose day job, we’re told, is a psychiatrist.  The CD also has Jimmy Calire (organ) and Kate Carney (background vocal). Listening to the CD, I would say they add real depth to the music and was sorry they missed the party.
The sole disappointment is that the sound man/system at the party was nowhere as good as on the CD. Sound was distorted and some frequency ranges were weak. Billi’s sound to the speakers (not his actual performance) seemed especially weak. But even considering that, I liked the looser concert style, with jammin’ and solos. These folks are entertainers and they know their business. It would have been nice if they explained the background behind the songs and group more.
It was an older crowd, but I can’t say it was older music. The genres the group favors are not as currently fashionable with youth’s preference as hip hop, rap, Latin and contemporary pop. Young folks seem to like their local gigs when present, though.
I do not pretend to be a music expert or critic. Just giving you my impression as a “Citizen Reporter” and local guy. For more expert opinions on this group’s work, read the CRITICS.

CD tracks:
1. Bad kind of Thinkin’
2. I really miss you babe
3. Who’s that woman
4. Our love’s been changin’
5. Fool’s dream
6. I’ll be so good
7. Good thing
8. Let’s start a party
9. Sweet tenderness
10. Like a Phoenix

Given her considerable vocal and guitar skills, one wonders why Russell isn’t more famous.  When you watch her belt out some songs, you might agree. As far as we know, Teresa Russell is the ONLY woman who has ever qualified for the national finals in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s lead guitar competition. Sometimes she seems like a female Jimmy Hendrix when she really gets going on that guitar.
