Ojai Herb Walk at Private Ranch on Saturday April 8th
Ojai native plant educator Lanny Kaufer is pleased to announce that he has been offered the opportunity to lead an herb walk on a beautiful private ranch in the Ojai mountains. The walk will take place on Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., including travel time. One of the conditions is that the location cannot be divulged in publicizing the event. As Kaufer explains, “It is a rare and special place where I have been longing to lead a walk for years. There are no public trails that allow access to this area. The land includes plants and features beyond what we usually encounter on my outings.” A docent also will be present to share some of the rare exotic plants found on the property.
The group will meet at Maricopa Plaza for a carpool to reduce the number of cars on the private road. The travel time to the trailhead will be 15-20 minutes. Walkers can plan on returning to Maricopa Plaza by 1 p.m.
As usual, Kaufer will identify important native plants and discuss and demonstrate the many ways that wild plants are used by Native Americans, herbalists, foragers, campers and gardeners for food, medicine, survival, and many other uses.
The cost is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 62 years of age and up, and $10 for students 13-18. Payment can be made by cash or check on the morning of the walk. An additional $5/person donation is requested by the nonprofit organization that manages the property to cover the costs associated with having visitors. Kids 5-12 can go free, one per adult, by prior arrangement. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. No dogs or smoking, please.
