Once Again, the European Elites Meddle in the Middle East’s Fate

Germany, headed by Mrs. Merkel, is once again taking the lead to undo American policy. Although well aware of the breaches committed by Iran against the Obama/Europe/Iran nuclear agreement, the EU’s elitists are ready to undermine the U. S. sanctions placed on Iran. Germany’s foreign minister was greeted on Monday, June 10, 2019, by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran, in a bid to save the Iran nuclear deal. Tehran had accused the EU countries of failing to live up to the agreement, which requires economic support to Iran if it restricts its nuclear program.

This claim was made despite Iran’s military involvement in Syria and Yemen and an inability for the signers to verify or control Iran’s nuclear machination.

Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said during the Monday visit, the Europeans would do their best to ensure that Iran receives economic benefits for staying in the agreement. Thereby, the European elites once again undermine America’s effort to demilitarize the Middle East. U. S. sanctions have worked well and put a strain on Tehran, as the sanctions hinder Iran’s ability to further its nuclear program.

In response to Mr. Maas’ referring to Iran’s involvement in war-like activity in the region, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, said that America must lift all sanctions before Iran would consider changing its actions in the region.

“The only way to de-escalate tensions is to stop the economic war,” said Mister Zarif at a Monday news conference. That remark makes two moot points. One, the U. S. is not a partner in this nuclear agreement anymore. Two, the remark in itself is verification that the U. S. sanctions work. It is pointless for Iran to threaten military activities if sanctions are not removed, for Iran cannot be trusted to honor any agreement. Iran always acted and chose to do what it pleased, never mind sanctions or nuclear agreements.

In David Fromkin’s seminal book on the formation on the modern Middle East, he explains why the Brits’ plan after WWI to create a group of Arab states was doomed to failure . It took the Western world 500 years to evolve into nations. The Arab world nad no such foundation. The British thought they could stay as administrators and everything would be fine. This is a must read book. Lots of detail. Read slowly. Just finished my second reading.
