Oxnard Chamber of Commerce Candidates Debate held

The Chamber of Commerce had some of the Oxnard special recall election (scheduled for May 1) challengers and incumbents to a debate on March 8 at the River Ridge Golf Club. About 70 people turned out to see most of the candidates put through their paces for only the second time in this election cycle.

The event was civil and calm, in spite of the swirling controversies. Only three of five candidates showed up for the Mayoral debate, although a fourth, incumbent Mayor Flynn showed up for a later part of the program. An empty chair sat waiting for him. Six City Council candidates of nine were present.

Mayoral candidate Aaron Starr held a forum a few weeks ago, with eight candidates showing up. Some candidates didn’t attend,  thinking they weren’t welcome, but all candidates were permitted to talk as much as they wanted.

There will be another debate next Thursday at 5 pm at the Corner Pocket Billiards, 568 South A St., Oxnard corner of A and 7th). It will be done with a “boxing” theme, complete with a boxing ring, round bell, cards, bouts, rounds and referees. So far 15 candidates have accepted an invitation to participate. Citizens Journal is one of the sponsors and is actively participating in producing the event, along with Alex Rey Rivera-Corner Pocket Manager; Noel Young, Peter Godinez, Elizabeth White, Cinthia Marcos de Beltran- Herbalife 24, Rev. Richard Lunares, and moderators Pablo Ortiz and Manuel Arriola.

There will be a third debate March 28, 7 pm at Pacifica High School, 600 E. Gonzales Road.
