Oxnard City Council recall threatened

Moving Oxnard Forward

Aaron —

It Appears Likely We Will Be Moving Forward with a Recall of the Oxnard City Council.

This Tuesday, May 16, the Oxnard City Council is scheduled to INCREASE your sewer rates by $279.24 per year – even though we voted down their latest rate increase this last November, when we adopted Measure M with 72% of the vote.

People we talk to are upset because the City Council is:

  • Seeking to raise rates again by huge amounts, even after we delivered a clear voter mandate for reasonable utility rates.
  • Supporting a taxpayer-funded lawsuit to overturn Measure M in the courts.
  • Claiming the utility enterprises need the money, while unlawfully skimming over $7 million per year from those utilities into the general fund to spend on the City Council’s pet projects

Several days ago I asked whether we should recall the Oxnard City Council.

Overwhelmingly, the answer was YES…YES…YES.

In the meantime, though, we have been hearing some interesting news through the grapevine that perhaps one or two councilmembers have already decided to vote against the 75% sewer rate increase.

If that’s true, it would be a welcome development.

So, here’s our current thinking.

Let’s begin the process. We will bring to the city council meeting a prepared Notice of Intention to Circulate Recall Petition for each of the five councilmembers. Early during the meeting we shall have those notices signed by at least 20 Oxnard registered voters.

But our final decision as to which council members will be served with papers will be made after the council’s decision on Tuesday night.

Aaron, please join me on Tuesday, May 16 starting at 6:00 pm at the Oxnard City Council meeting (at 305 West Third Street, Oxnard, CA).

While you are attending the council meeting I request you do two things:

1)    Join me in signing the five Notices of Intention to Circulate Recall Petitions.

2)    Join me in speaking out against the rate increases during the council meeting.

If the city council sees that many of us are seriously opposed to their proposed 75% sewer rate increase, we may be able to convince a majority of the city council to vote NO, in which case I am inclined to thank them and go home.

If not, it appears likely that we will begin the process of recalling at least three city council members from office.

Aaron, will you please join me on Tuesday, May 16 starting at 6:00 pm at the Oxnard City Council meeting (at 305 West Third Street, Oxnard, CA)?
