City Manager Rock introduced Gregory Barnes at the May 15, 2019 city council meeting. Barnes was hired to replace Ed Mount who retired in December. Mr. Barnes came from Oxnard, where he was a recreation supervisor at various levels and an athletic director. Rock stated that Gregory Barnes has a BA in Sociology from ASU and an AA in Liberal Arts from Ventura College and is also a certified EMS/First Aid.
With only three days on the job, City Manager Rock said he was pleased to have Gregory Barnes jump into issues at Harding Park. Barnes spoke briefly thanking the city and said he was looking forward to working with the new team. He reminded the audience of the Second Annual Senior Day on May 22, 2019.
Recruiting and Hiring
In December 2018, City Manager Rock announced that he would have to hire a recruiter for this position and raise the salary. Note that there is also an incremental raise after 6 months. See the 2017 Oxnard salary and benefits information here.
Oxnard recently announced potential layoffs of 1900 employees. ”Facing a $10 million budget gap, the city manager of Ventura County’s largest city has informed nearly 1,900 employees that some of their jobs will be on the chopping block.”… read article here. Oxnard’s financial problems are exacerbated from escalating pension costs set to double by 2024.
