Update: A nine year old boy, Ruben Arroyo, was fatally injured, his sister seriously hurt while their mother is conscious and hospitalized. The highway remains closed. The car was headed southbound on Balcom Canyon Road when it went out into traffic and was hit by the tanker.

The highway was reopened after 11PM Friday night after the tanker was emptied of gasoline. Environmental Health personnel remained on scene to mop.  The mother and her seven year old daughter remain in serious condition while the tanker driver is listed with moderate injuries.

A signal light was supposed to have been installed by Caltrans in the spring/summer of this year at the deadly interjection. However it was delayed to next year due to high bids of over $600,000.  Neighbors are now organizing to push the signal be installed this year due to the severity of this accident.

A tanker hit a small sedan around 7:50 AM August 10th, closing Los Angeles Ave. (Highway 118) at Balcom Canyon Road in Somis. Four people have been seriously injured.  The tanker appears to have been traveling eastbound when it collided with the sedan.  The tanker, carrying gasoline, appears to have jackknifed and now is dangling over the railroad tracks.

The tanker is leaking gasoline and the incident is being handled by hazmat teams from the Ventura County Fire Department.

Highway 118 is closed between Somis and Moorpark and train traffic has been halted through the area as well.

Caltrans was supposed to install a signal light at the dangerous intersection in early spring/summer of 2018.  However, due to the design Caltrans approved, the bids came in over $600,000.  The project has now been pushed into next year.

The cause of the accident has yet to be determined.

This report will be updated during the day as more information becomes available.

God bless everyone involved. It’s a nasty intersection that has long demanded a light.
