Simi Valley Police Dispatcher of The Year

April 9th-15th, 2017 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. This second week in April is set aside to recognize the thousands of telecommunicators, commonly referred to as dispatchers, for their contributions to their communities. Locally, and throughout our nation, whether a community disaster or personal crisis, 9-1-1 dispatchers are there to answer the call. They are the voice of reason and comfort as they send help to those in need.

The Simi Valley Police Department is proud to announce that Lauren Harkins has been selected as the 2017 Dispatcher of the Year. Lauren was honored at the 2017 Ventura County Public Safety Dispatchers of the Year Dinner on Sunday, April 9, 2017, where Chief David Livingstone presented her with the award. She will receive additional recognition at the Simi Valley Police Department Annual Recognition Awards Dinner in May 2017 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

Lauren Harkins grew up in Simi Valley, graduated from Simi Valley High School and was hired by the Simi Valley Police Department on February 16, 2015, at the age of 19. She successfully completed the Public Safety Dispatcher Academy in 2015 and within a short period of time, completed training and began to work her own shift.

Lauren was nominated by her peers to receive the Dispatcher of the Year Award for 2017. In her brief career, Lauren has made a real difference. Her colleagues describe her as mature beyond her years, kind, never judgmental and comment that she gathers information from callers in a professional manner.

Lauren has received numerous commendations during her brief tenure and excels at customer service. She is credited for saving the life of a man on Christmas Day 2016 in Oslo, Norway. When the family called their father on Christmas Day he was experiencing difficulty communicating. The family was unable to reach emergency services in Norway so they dialed 9-1-1 in Simi Valley. Upon hearing the distress in their voices, Lauren called Norway and dispatched assistance to the seriously ill gentleman. Doctors confirmed that had it not been for the quick actions of Lauren in summoning help, the father would not have survived.

Law enforcement was a natural career path for Lauren as her father is a retired police sergeant and she has numerous relatives in the public safety field.

Congratulations to Police Dispatcher Lauren Harkins for being selected as the Simi Valley Police Department’s 2017 Dispatcher of the Year.
