Speaker Paul Ryan will not be seeking Reelection

By Staff:

This morning, April 11 2018, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced he will not be seeking reelection.  He will serve out his current term in Congress and leave DC in January 2019.  Mr. Ryan claimed his decision was based on the need to spend time with his family and that he had accomplished most of what he came to Washington to do.  One of his key goals will be left undone, entitlement reform, which passed the House and failed to pass in the Senate.  Entitlements, which include Medicare and Social Security, are responsible for a large share of the Federal government’s deficit spending.

The Speaker was questioned if he is retiring because of speculation that the Republicans will lose the House in November.  Ryan denied that factored into his decision.

Forty Two Republican House members will not be running in the midterms. A percentage of those seats are in districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016. With a 24 seat majority this leaves the body in play for take over by the Democrats come November.
