Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula – Screening Dead Man Walking

Once again the State of California is examining the death penalty and social justice. The Social Concerns Action Committee of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula wants to honor this conundrum of our modern world by screening, free to the public, the 1995 film, Dead Man Walking. This Oscar winning film is based on the true story of a Death Row convicted murderer (Sean Penn), and a nun, Sister Prejean (Susan Sarandon) who befriends and spiritually advises him. She, also reaches out to help the surviving relatives of the victims. Powerful emotions are unleashed as they fight for a stay of execution.

A discussion follows the film facilitated by Pat English, a retired Director of Social Services in Skilled Nursing facilities for many years and a longtime advocate for abolishing the death penalty.  We are interested in your thoughts. Screening is 6:30 P.M., Tuesday, June 25, at 740 East Main St, Santa Paula.
