Uptick in Stolen Vehicles in City of Ventura

From January 1st 2017 through July 31st 2017 the City of Ventura experienced a 25% increase in stolen vehicles compared to the same time period in 2016. During this period, Ventura Police Officers took a total of 176 stolen vehicle reports, 44 more than last year. Keys were left inside the vehicle in 68 of the reported cases. Crown Dodge, 6300 King Drive, reported 16 stolen vehicles during this time period.

Update: The 25 % increase was determined by comparing UCR (Uniform Crime Reporting) data for 2017 (220) to 2016 (176), a difference of 44. The 174 number used in this release was reported in error.

The top 5 stolen vehicles by make were Toyota (21), Dodge (20), Ford (20), Nissan (18), and Honda (16).

The Ventura Police Department encourages the public to follow these prevention tips:

  1. Never leave your car running or the keys in the ignition when you’re away from it, even for “just a minute”
  2. Do not leave a spare key in the vehicle
  3. Always roll up the windows and lock the car
  4. Never leave valuables in plain view
  5. Park in busy, well-lighted area
