Artist’s Rendition of a Dyson Sphere around Tabby’s Star Dr Josh Simon

KIC 8462852 is only 1,470 light years away.  Still, Scientists can discern a strange dimming pattern.  Known as Tabby’s star named after the initial study’s lead author, Tabetha S. Boyajian (May 2017), many theories have surfaced in an attempt to determine what gives this star its unusual “behavior.”  Everything from an intelligent society constructing a Dyson Sphere around the star, to an exotic arrangement of planets the likes of which have never been seen.

Dr Josh Simon will take a decidedly more cautious and scientific approach as he describes the latest findings and theories.

Dr. Josh Simon grew up in Ann Arbor, MI, and caught the astronomy bug early – his aunt gave him a small telescope to look at Halley’s comet in 1986.  When it came time for college, he decided to head west and attend Stanford, where he majored in physics.  He then crossed the Bay for graduate school at UC Berkeley and finished his PhD in astronomy there in 2005.  He was fortunate that California has lots of opportunities for astronomers, so after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Caltech he moved to Carnegie Observatories, a nonprofit research institute also in Pasadena, where he is  now on the permanent staff.   His research interests in astronomy are fairly broad, covering almost anything that goes on in nearby galaxies, ranging from dark matter to supernova explosions.  He currently lives in Sherman Oaks with his wife and two sons.
