Ventura Citizens for Energy Independence and Supervisor John Zaragoza Host School Supply Giveaway for Pre K- 12th Students in Nyeland Acres

Nyeland Acres, CA – In an effort to give back to the communities in which our energy industry employees live and work, Ventura Citizens for Energy Independence, along with Ventura County Supervisor John Zaragoza, hosted a free barbecue and school supply giveaway in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme’s Nyeland Acres Center.

More than 300 students and residents from the Nyeland Acres community attended the free community event this past Saturday, September 7th, which included a barbecue, dance presentation by Boys & Girls Club students, free backpacks and school supplies to all children in attendance, a raffle, and a gift of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-focused supplies to the Boys & Girls Club Nyeland Acres Center.

Over 200 children and teens from the community received brand new backpacks and school supplies to help them succeed academically.

“The young people in this neighborhood, and we at the club, are so appreciative of everything VCEI has done to help support our community. Every little thing goes so far to help our kids and an event of this size has a huge positive impact,” said Monique Garcia, Unit Director of Boys & Girls Clubs Nyeland Acres Community Center.

Students had the opportunity to learn about careers in STEM fields, particularly those in the energy industry, and received career pathway materials developed through the educational program Careers in Energy which talks about the diverse employment opportunities across the educational attainment spectrum.

An unincorporated neighborhood falling in Zaragoza’s Supervisorial District, Nyeland Acres is among the most disadvantaged communities in Ventura County.

Contributions from Aera Energy, California Resources Corporation, and Carbon California Company made this event possible. Carbon employees, Jane Farkas and Scott Price attended the event and presented the STEM Materials to Nyeland Acres Community Center Unit Director, Monique Garcia. “There is such great need in parts of our community – I am honored to be involved with an event like this that so directly gives back to the children, community, and amazing organizations like the Boys & Girls Club.” said Farkas.

Event Location – Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme, Nyeland Acres Center – 3334 Santa Clara Ave., Oxnard, CA 93036. The event ran 11 am to 2 pm.
