The Ventura County Ballet revamps their classic holiday performances with custom backdrops from world-renowned Russian artist Yuri Samodurov

(VENTURA COUNTY) — Oct. 30, 2018 — Ventura County Ballet, Ventura County’s premiere regional ballet celebrates its 20th year anniversary of performing Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker with new scenic backdrops from internationally-recognized Russian artist Yuri Samodurov.

The Ventura County Ballet received a generous grant from the VCCF Smith Hobson Foundation, which provided funds for new, hand-painted sets for their annual performance of The Nutcracker. New designs include a complete set of backdrops for the prologue, snow, Candyland, and Christmas tree. These picturesque sets were created in Russia by prominent Russian artist Yuri Samodurov, and will be spectacularly unveiled opening day Dec. 1st

Samodurov and his crew are globally-acclaimed artists based in Perm, Russia, where he has studied the history of theatrical-decorative art and the achievements of Russian and foreign experts in the field of stage design, technique, and technology for 28 years.  He is currently based at The Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre. This legendary theatre, often called “Tchaikovsky’s House,” is one of the oldest theaters in the country and hosts some of the most famous ballet companies in all of Russia.

“We are delighted to reveal the addition of these beautiful backdrops for our 20th anniversary holiday performances,” said Kathleen Noblin, Founder and Executive Director of Ventura County Ballet. “Our whole team is inspired to have such international and professional talents of art and dance come to our little beach town in Ventura.”
