Sacramento, CA — Two years after Governor Newsom sent a letter to California’s Public Utilities Commission urging the closure of SoCalGas’ Aliso Canyon gas storage site, environmental advocates and members of impacted communities will march in protest at the Governor’s approval of the facility’s expansion. On Thursday, November 18, Sacramento will be the nexus for the public health, safety and environmental struggles of three communities impacted by the unchecked expansion of natural gas infrastructure: Porter Ranch, Playa Del Rey and Ventura.
From Porter Ranch, protestors will demand Governor Newsom act on his mandate to close SoCalGas’ Aliso Canyon facility for good. Residents of Playa Del Rey will likewise demand the closure of the Gas Company’s storage site in their backyards. Ventura community members whose children attend school yards away from an expanding SoCalGas compressor station will demand Newsom shut the facility down.
The event will begin with a press conference at the Capitol highlighting frontline voices. Immediately afterwards, protestors will march to the offices of the California Public Utilities Commission holding mops and cleaning supplies ready to “clean house” at the agency that has favored SoCalGas in so many recent decisions. Finally, protestors will stage a sit-in at the Governor’s office.
