On Monday, April 24, 2023 at approximately 2:00 PM, a Port Hueneme police officer was
traveling to an unrelated call for service in the city when he noticed a vehicle driving at a
high rate of speed.
The vehicle, a blue Toyota Tacoma, drove past the officer who was in a marked black and white unit northbound on Ventura Road approaching Sunkist Street.
The driver of the truck continued northbound, driving into the bicycle lane and entered the
intersection without stopping for the red light.
The Tacoma collided head on with a black Mercedes Benz sedan turning eastbound onto Sunkist Street from the southbound turn lane on Ventura Road.
The three occupants of the Mercedes exited the vehicle and were treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Services. The driver of the Tacoma was also examined at the scene.
One of the occupants of the Mercedes sustained moderate injuries as a result of the
collision while the other two had complaints of pain. All parties were transported to local
hospitals for further treatment.
During the course of the investigation the driver made statements indicating his actions
were intentional.
He was identified as Spencer Bautista, 35 years, from Oxnard. Bautista was arrested and charged with 245(a)(1) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon, 23103(a)VC – Reckless Driving.
While at the hospital awaiting medical clearance, Bautista made other statements to officers and was subsequently charged with 69 PC – Threatening an
Executive Officer and 422 PC – Criminal Threats.
He was later transported to the Ventura County Main Jail.
