California Highway Patrol Officer Andre Moye, Jr., 34, was shot and killed during a shootout near the 215 freeway in Riverside, California. Two other CHP officers were seriously wounded during the same gun battle. One remains in critical condition. The suspect died at the scene.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., Officer Moye was conducting a routine traffic stop. Moye called a tow truck to have the vehicle impounded. While filling out paperwork, the suspect grabbed a rifle from inside the truck and started firing at Moye.
Officer Moye radioed for backup. Three additional CHP officers arrived along with law enforcement officials from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside Police Department. As a gun battle continued, Moye and two additional CHP officers were shot.
Officer Moye was taken to a local hospital in Moreno Valley where he was pronounced dead.
The heroic Moye graduated from the CHP academy in 2017. He is survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
“This tragedy is devastating and we are grief-stricken by this horrible situation that once again reminds us of the constant risk faced by law enforcement,” said Brad Houle, CAHP Credit Union President. “Officer Moye was a hero in the truest sense. We grieve with his wife, family, and peers.”
Officer Moye will remain in the thoughts and prayers of our community as we mourn this heartbreaking loss.
