CAIR-SFBA Welcomes San Francisco Board of Supervisors Consideration of Ceasefire Resolution

    News Release

Mobilizations Planned in Six Bay Area Cities

(SANTA CLARA, CA, 12/5/23) – The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, welcomed the plan to introduce a permanent Gaza ceasefire resolution at today’s San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting.

San Francisco Supervisor Dean Preston will propose the resolution, which will include a call for a “sustained ceasefire, humanitarian aid, the release of hostages, and condemning antisemitism and Islamophobia.”

CAIR-SFBA urges San Francisco residents to attend the meeting to:

Demonstrate their support for the resolution and solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Convey concern and heartache for Palestinians living under constant peril.
Share personal stories that humanize the profound loss experienced by the San Francisco Palestinian-American community and its toll on them.
Express deep concern for the rise in racist and Islamophobic attacks happening across the Bay Area.
Send a message to our local members of Congress that they demand support for a permanent ceasefire now and an end to unfettered U.S. aid for Israel’s military that has terrorized Palestinians for decades.

CAIR-SFBA also calls on residents from Alameda, Berkeley, Hayward, Marin, and San Jose to attend their respective council meetings tomorrow and advocate for the inclusion of ceasefire resolutions on the agendas of upcoming council sessions.

In a statement, CAIR San Francisco Bay Area (CAIR-SFBA) Executive Director Zahra Billoo said:

“CAIR-SFBA applauds Supervisor Preston’s resolution for a sustained ceasefire to bring an end to the atrocities that Israel is committing in Gaza. We urge residents of all six cities to attend tomorrow’s meetings to show their support.

“While some may question the value of local governments weighing in on international conflicts, resolutions like this communicate very strongly that ‘We see you. We care about this also.’ It is also an important way for communities and local legislators to articulate that U.S. funding should be focused in the U.S. We don’t have money for schools or homes but are sending billions of dollars to Israel.”

CAIR-SFBA is an office of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
