News Release
Aware of the great need for food assistance in these challenging times, Pleasant Valley Recreation & Park District recently applied for and received a grant enabling the distribution of food to members of the local community. This effort to ease the pains of food insecurity was made possible by a grant from the City of Camarillo, the Department of Housing & Urban Development, and partnership with Food Share of Ventura County.
A bag of food will be given out, free of charge, to anyone who comes to the Senior Center on Fridays* between noon and 2pm. Food is obtained from Food Share of Ventura County and typically includes a variety of healthy fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy.
The Senior Center has a years-long history of providing food assistance to those in need in the community. This service paused for a short time while grant funding was being sought to support this needed service. The District is thrilled to be able to resume bringing aid to the Camarillo area.
“Addressing our community’s health needs through food supplementation is very fulfilling work! I am so pleased to have the opportunity to spearhead this effort by the District to make sure none of our neighbors have to go hungry. This important service is just one of many that we offer to improve the quality of life for those we serve.” – Bryanna Gonzalez, Recreation Specialist.
In order to qualify, a person’s household income must meet HUD low/moderate income limits and a Demographic Form must be filled out prior to receiving food. This form can be found online at www.pvprpd.org to be prefilled out and brought, or printed forms are also available at the District’s Admin Office at 1605 E. Burnely St. Food is available while supplies last and it is recommended that forms are filled out and submitted in advance to help staff gauge the amount of food that will be needed.
Attendees are asked to remain in their vehicles and follow posted signage as they drive up to the Senior Center to form a line. Staff will come to each vehicle to accept forms and then deliver a bag of food to each car. This helps the process move along quickly to serve as many people as possible, while minimizing contact. The venue is located at the Community Center on the corner of Carmen Dr. and Burnley St. and visiting the website is recommended to view the preferred flow of traffic for everyone’s safety.
