Nature of Incident: Illegal Firearms, Counterfeit Money, & Narcotics Sales Arrests

During the month of September 2021, deputies with the Camarillo Traffic Unit conducted a routine traffic stop for a minor traffic violation, near Ventura Boulevard and Camarillo Center Drive. During the traffic stop, deputies contacted the driver, Nathan Burkett and passenger, Wendy Statum. Burkett was determined to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance.
Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail (SED) detectives arrived on scene and assisted in the investigation. Detectives searched Burkett’s vehicle incident to his arrest and discovered a loaded Glock, .40 caliber firearm in the vehicle. Additionally, detectives located multiple rounds of various calibers of ammunition, and several loaded .40 caliber magazines associated to Burkett. Burkett is a convicted felon who is prohibited from owning firearms and ammunition.
Through further investigation, Detectives identified Statum to be in possession of several hundred dollars in counterfeit US currency, drug paraphernalia and a large quantity or methamphetamine possessed for sales.
Based on the investigation, detectives obtained and executed a search warrant for Burkett’s and Statum’s residence located in the 1100 block of Ventura Boulevard.
Burkett was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance with a firearm, possession of a controlled substance with a firearm, unlawful transfer of a firearm, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. On September 10, 2021, Burkett posted bail for $50,000
Statum was arrested for being in possession of narcotics for sales, possession of counterfeit money and drug paraphernalia. Statum is currently in custody pending a future court date.
The Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail is comprised of six plain clothes detectives who focus on efforts that negatively affect the quality of life of the law-abiding citizens of Camarillo. The goal of Camarillo SED is to reduce property and violent crime through investigations and direct enforcement.
