VENTURA, California – District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced today that Nelson Manuel Rivas (10/21/98), of Oxnard, has been charged in the death of one juvenile female and the serious bodily injury of another. The complaint charges Rivas with felony violations of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and child endangerment.
On June 20, 2021, California Highway Patrol officers arrested Rivas after he was seen driving southbound on U.S. Route 101 at an excessive speed. Rivas lost control of his car and crashed down an embankment south of Victoria Avenue, in Ventura.
On June 22, 2021, Rivas appeared for arraignment in the Ventura County Superior Court. Rivas is scheduled to appear for a bail review hearing on June 25, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 13 of the Ventura County Superior Court. The case was also set for an early disposition conference on July 22, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 12. Rivas is currently in custody with bail set at $85,000.
