Guests from Puerta Vallarta, Jalisco México will spend two days this week touring
the City of Port Hueneme and participating in a signing ceremony that will solidify
their Sister City relationship. This is the first Sister City for the “The Friendly City
by the Sea” following the establishment of the Port Hueneme Sister City
Committee in 2019.
A sister city relationship is a long-term, cooperative relationship between two cities
in different countries through which cultural, educational, business, and technical
exchanges take place.
The mission of sister cities is to promote peace through mutual
respect, cooperation, and understanding—one individual, one community at a time.
Governor for the Southern California Sister City Program Gil Garcia states that “The sister city program is an incredible opportunity to travel, build
partnerships, promote peace and understanding, and have fun!”
The Sister City Group from Puerta Vallarta will be led by Chair of the of the Port Hueneme Sister City Committee, Mayor “Bobby” Martinez, and City
Councilmember Laura Hernandez.
Former Mayor Sylvia Munoz Schopp who launched the Sister City Program in 2019 will also join the group along with Gil Garcia from the City of Santa Barbara Sister City Program. Santa Barbara also shares a Sister City relationship with Puerta Vallarta.
Guests will visit the US Navy Seabee Museum, the Reel Guppy Education Center,
Wheelhouse Dispensary, Fathomwerx , and other local landmarks. The signing
ceremony will take place at Port Hueneme City Hall at 3 pm, Monday, July 10.
