SANTA PAULA, CA – Ever wonder why the great master artists were so great? You’re not the only one! Discover the answer during the Santa Paula Art Museum’s upcoming, two-part “Exploring ‘Secret Knowledge’” class for ages 16 and over. The class will meet Wednesday, October 23, 2019, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm; and Thursday, October 24, 2019, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Explore the landmark book and a documentary film entitled “Secret Knowledge” in which artist David Hockney reveals the secret tools and techniques used by generations of painters for their incredibly realistic results. Led by art historian Meg Phelps, the class will put the scholarship in context, explore topics in the film in greater depth, and discuss its relevance to the discourse of art history. SPECIAL BONUS: Students have the option to also attend a special live camera obscura recreation at the Museum on Sunday, October 27, 2019, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. In addition to serving as the Santa Paula Art Museum’s Curator of Creativity, Meg Phelps has taught at Ventura College for over 20 years as a lecturer in Art History, Art Appreciation, and the History of Photography. She now teaches exclusively online and is excited to get back to a face-to-face classroom at the Museum’s Cole Creativity Center!
The Santa Paula Art Museum occupies two historic buildings located at 117 N 10th Street and 123 N 10th Street in downtown Santa Paula. The Museum features rotating exhibitions of vintage and contemporary art, creative classes for children and adults, family-friendly events, live musical performances, a gift shop, and more. Regular museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
