SANTA PAULA, CA – You’re invited to journey to “The Land of Light: Art, Science, and Play” at the Santa Paula Art Museum on Saturday, October 6, 2018, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Now in its second year, the one-night only event will encourage visitors to see and experience art in a whole new way. The Land of Light is inspired by artists of all ages and is designed to engage the community through interactive art installations including lighting effects, video graphics, and displays of science and technology. Admission to the event is free for everyone.
The Land of Light will see the entire Santa Paula Art Museum campus transformed as it encompasses multiple indoor and outdoor spaces and spans from day to night. At sunset, a special “lighting ceremony” will activate monumental light projections, illuminating the variety of exhibitions on display. The interactive exhibits range from two-dimensional works to three-dimensional sculptures, “art cars,” and more. A variety of maker stations will allow guests to interact with and add to the various artworks and displays. The event will include music and multiple performances by circus artists and glow dancers. Guests can also grab a bite to eat at Game Over Catering’s taco truck (tacos sold separately).
The Land of Light will feature exhibitions and performances by The Aerial Studio, Altarbeast, Jodi Bogart’s Art, Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clara Valley, Fancy Pantz Face and Body Art, Kamyi Lee and R.S. Buck, cirque performer Erin Maxick, Juan D. Mendoza, Lynne Okun of HeartSpace Healing Arts, CalArts alumna Shan Wu, So Cal Sign Gal, and many more.
The Santa Paula Art Museum occupies two historic buildings located at 117 N 10th Street and 123 N 10th Street in downtown Santa Paula. The Museum features rotating exhibitions of vintage and contemporary art, art classes for children and adults, artist talks and demonstrations, musical performances, a gift shop, and more. Regular museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Sunday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Regular admission is $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for seniors, and free for students and museum members. Description of event: This class is definitely not your grandmother’s kind of collage! Equal parts memory, curiosity, experiment and instinct, collage is a fascinating medium with endless potential for creative expression. In an ongoing series, artist Karen Browdy will share the essential skills, tools, and techniques needed to build a meaningful art practice in collage. Description of event: Be the first to see the Santa Paula Art Museum’s newest original exhibition, “The Wall: Boundaries Between and Within Us.” The group exhibition explores the nature of boundaries – lines that define, surround, protect, divide, include and exclude – whether real or imagined. In responding to the theme, the artists have created a thought-provoking collection of artworks that is simultaneously literal and metaphorical, social and personal, political and spiritual.

Description of event: A rare opportunity! Follow photographer Luther Gerlach and witness the magic of historic photographic processes. Participants will get an up-close view of wet-collodion tintypes and salt print processes as Gerlach uses his mammoth-plate vintage camera to shoot at nearby locations. Description of event: Come and celebrate Día de los Muertos in Santa Paula on Sunday, November 4, 2018. Participating sites include the Santa Paula Art Museum, the Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum, the California Oil Museum, and Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery. This free, family-friendly event will include a day of traditional craft making, music, Aztec dancers, face painting, storytelling and altar installations. Día de los Muertos attire is encouraged! Visitors can begin at any of the participating locations and walk to the others. Pick up a Día de los Muertos passport and collect a stamp at each of the locations to enter into a free raffle drawing.

Description of event: Now in its eleventh year, the Ag Art Alliance’s popular pastoral art show, Art About Agriculture, premieres at the Santa Paula Art Museum on Saturday, November 10, 2018, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The group show features dozens of artworks by artists from across the country who have portrayed the beauty and bounty of agriculture in scenes ranging from fields, farmworkers, and farmers markets to animals, barns, and backroad vistas.
