John MacFarlane, serial entrepreneur and founder of iconic digital audio company Sonos, will become the 17thmember of the Pacific Coast Business Times Hall of Fame at a ceremony on May 17.
MacFarlane, a Santa Barbara area resident, founded Software.com in the 1990s after receiving his master’s degree from UC Santa Barbara. He subsequently sold the company in a multibillion dollar transaction. In 2002, he co-founded Sonos, a company that has revolutionized the audio industry and won devoted followers worldwide.
Sonos is currently one of the biggest employers based in Santa Barbara and it has become one of the world’s largest independent hardware companies.
MacFarlane stepped down as CEO last year, turning management over to Patrick Spence, although he remains an employee and mentor. He also advises other entrepreneurs in the region.
The 2018 Business Hall of Fame induction will be part of the Business Times’ annual 101 One Hundred program and this year’s evening reception will be held at the Hotel Californian in Santa Barbara beginning at 5:30 p.m. May 17.
UCSB Professor John Bowers, director of the university’s Institute for Energy Efficiency, will introduce MacFarlane at the Hall of Fame program.
