YOUNG ARTISTS ENSEMBLE presents The 40th ANNUAL TEEN SUMMER MUSICAL

    The Pirates of Penzance

Music by Arthur Sullivan and Libretto by W.S. Gilbert

    Musical Direction by Zachary Spencer

    Conducted by Susan Trewory-Calkins

    Directed by Mark Andrew Reyes

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Young Artists Ensemble presents its 40th Annual Teen Summer Musical production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance directed by Mark Andrew Reyes August 6 – 9, 2020 livestreamed and projected at Conejo Creek Park at 8:00 pm each night.  Musical Direction is by Zachary Spencer and the young orchestra is conducted by Susan Treworgy-Calkins.

This show is performed live by 10 performers at a time combined with film performance of the other 10 performers. The orchestra has been recorded and the overture filmed. Both recorded and live performances are accomplished safely on an outdoor patio “safety stage” that is 60 ft. long and provides each of the ten performers with a 6 ft. by 4 ft. performance area enclosed on the sides, back, and top.

“We were fortunate to have an open outdoor space, and the construction resources on hand that allowed us to create this safe environment for these gifted performers,” says Reyes.  “They have responded to the challenges fantastically. The cast follows the safety protocols without any issues, even finding an element of good natured fun in our daily gatherings. Their respect for each other and for the concept of the performance has driven them to have to work harder in between rehearsals than on a usual production.  I am immensely proud of them, and my exceptional production team.”

Mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate (instead of a pilot) by his nursemaid Ruth at the age of eight, the handsome Frederic is now twenty-one and, though quite fond of the group of joyous and fun-loving pirates, chooses to abandon his profession, dedicating himself instead to their eradication. Shortly after leaving them, he encounters a gaggle of beautiful maidens (one of whom, Mabel, steals his heart) and their father, the eccentric Major-General. The whole group has a run-in with the pirates themselves before escaping on the false premise that the Major-General is an orphan — a fact these tenderhearted pirates simply cannot help but take into account, given the fact that the majority of them are orphans themselves. Just as Frederic is ready to lead a band of lily-livered policemen to take out the Pirate King and his men, a secret is uncovered that will change his fate forever.

A YouTube Live streaming link will be emailed with ticket confirmation. Those who wish to view the live stream at Conejo Creek Park in a Drive-In Movie style from their car may also purchase a ticket.  Tickets can be purchase online through the honor system for $15 for one person, $30 for two and $45 for three or more.  Tickets to attend the drive-in style movie presentation are $30 for parking in the front sections and $25 for spaces in the rear. There are restrictions for the drive in theatre, and the performers will not be there in person.  Purchase all tickets by calling 805-381-1246 or at www.yaeonline.com.  Call (805) 381-2747 or visit www.yaeonline.com if you have any questions.
