Winter Solstice 2018: Fum! Fum! Fum!

Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula

The Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula will present an Annual Winter Solstice Celebration on Friday, December 21 at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary of the church, followed by Amaranth, Alegria and Wassail. For those who wish to stay and sing songs of the season, Rise Up Caroling. Solstice is an ancient planetary-wide celebration of the longest night and the returning of the Light. From ancient times, traditions have mixed amongst religions and cultures. So it is that this year we sing the Spanish Carol, Fum! Fum! Fum! and hear the stories of the Solstice in Mexico mixed with Christmas and other traditions of bringing light to the darkest time of the year. The Celebration will feature the music of John Robles and Chucumite, Xavier Montes and DeColores Music Students, Solstice Singers and more. Solstice finery and jollity encouraged.

Chucumite is a quartet of musicians who play ‘son jarocho’, the folk music of the southern portion of the Mexican state of Veracruz, on the Gulf coast of Mexico. Chucumite is comprised of John Robles, who plays ‘arpa jarocha’, or Veracruz folk harp; Robert Perales, who plays ‘jarana jarocha’; Sean Hutchinson, who plays ‘leona’, a large, 4 string instrument plucked with a plectrum of cowhorn; and David Salais, who plays ‘requinto jarocho’, a smaller 4 string instrument, also plucked with a plectrum. Robles and Perales have been performing together for over twenty years and are described by folklorist and son jarocho scholar Rafael Figueroa Hernandez as “exponents of son jarocho for many years, who as good creative musicians belong to the jarocho tradition but whose music, at the same time, has been influenced by that which is happening around it”. Hutchinson joined the group in 2009, and Salais in 2015.

The church is located at 740 E Main Street in Santa Paula. The Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula has been home to a number of musical events throughout its history. Admission is FREE. A basket will be available after the Celebration for those who wish to participate in a Free Will Offering to help compensate Chucumite. UUCSP is a registered Ventura County Historical
Landmark. For more information about the venue, call 805-525-4647 or email [email protected]. Parking is on the street, in the lot at the library or behind the church.
