VENTURA, California – Acting District Attorney Cheryl M. Temple announced today that Caden Crowell (DOB 11/19/98), of Camarillo, was sentenced by Judge Ryan Wright to 50 years to life in prison for the first-degree murder of David Smith, of Thousand Oaks. On July 14, 2020, Crowell pled guilty to the first-degree murder of Mr. Smith and admitted the special allegation that he personally used a firearm causing death.
On the evening of November 30, 2017, Crowell fired one shot from a vehicle that killed Mr. Smith while he was riding a skateboard down the street. Mr. Smith was shot near the intersection of Calle Diamonte and Avenida del Platino in Newbury Park and died at the scene. The case was investigated by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.
