    Oxnard | Firearm/Narcotics Arrest

oseph Manzano, Oxnard, 28 years old

Ventura County Sheriff Department – Incident Press Release

On April 26, 2019, Detectives from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit coordinated a narcotics enforcement operation aimed at combating illegal narcotics activities in the coastal communities of Ventura County and surrounding neighborhoods. Deputies contacted and arrested Joseph Manzano of Oxnard for narcotics and firearms violations.

On April 27, 2019, at approximately 1:38 AM, deputies were conducting directed enforcement in the area of Roland Way and Cuesta Del Mar Drive in the City of Oxnard. This area is in the South Winds neighborhood a short distance from Port Hueneme beach. Deputies observed a vehicle being driven in the area and conducted an enforcement stop on the vehicle for a vehicle code violation.

Deputies contacted four occupants, including Joseph Manzano who is a documented member of a criminal street gang. Manzano was the front passenger in the vehicle. Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle pursuant to the Ventura County probation terms of one of the other occupants. During the investigation, deputies found approximately 50 grams of methamphetamine and packaging consistent with narcotics sales. Additionally, deputies located a loaded rifle which had a sawed off barrel. Through the investigation, deputies determined the methamphetamine and illegal rifle belonged to Manzano. Manzano was subsequently arrested and booked at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility for narcotics and firearms related offenses. Manzano’s bail was set at $100,000.00 and is pending criminal proceedings.

Ventura County Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 reward for information, which leads to the arrest and criminal complaint against the person(s) responsible  for  this crime. The caller may remain anonymous. The call is  not  recorded.  Call  Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).

Ocasio-Cortez Uses Synagogue Shooting To Push Gun Control Bill

    2

    Peter Hasson | Reporter

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday used a shooting at a California synagogue that left one person dead to demand the Senate act on a gun control bill.

One person is dead and three others are injured following the shooting at Chabad of Poway synagogue, authorities said. Police have one suspect in custody, who is described as a 19-year-old male.

“Heartbroken to hear of the San Diego synagogue shooting, particularly so on this final day of Passover,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in a tweet, before pivoting to gun control. (RELATED: Ocasio-Cortez Took A Shot At Republicans But Ended Up Hitting Democrats Instead)

“We have a responsibility to love + protect our neighbors,” she wrote. “The longer the Senate delays holding a vote on #HR8, the more we put Americans at risk.”

The legislation expands federal background checks to include private transfers and could effectively ban Americans ages 18 to 20 from acquiring handguns. The Democratically controlled House passed HR8 in February.

California, where the shooting took place, recently tightened statewide gun laws.

Legislation that took effect in January raised the age for purchasing a long gun from 18 to 21. A federal judge in March struck down a law banning firearm magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

On Obstruction, the Mueller Report is Clintonesque

    by Thomas L. Knapp

On April 18, US Attorney William Barr released Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on the probe into “Russian meddling” in the 2016 presidential election. The report cleared President Donald Trump and his campaign team of allegations that they conspired with the Russian government in that meddling. But on the question of “obstruction of justice,” Mueller punted in an eerily familiar way.

Return with me briefly to those thrilling days of yesteryear. Specifically, July 5, 2016. As I wrote then:

“FBI director James Comey spoke 2,341 words explaining his decision not to recommend criminal charges over Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server to transmit, receive and store classified information during her tenure as US Secretary of State. He could have named that tune in four words: ‘Because she’s Hillary Clinton.’ Comey left no doubt whatsoever that Clinton and her staff broke the law …”

Mueller’s report likewise cites evidence of multiple attempts by the president to obstruct his investigation. “[T]he President sought to use his official power outside of usual channels,” he writes. “These actions ranged from efforts to remove the Special Counsel and to reverse the effect of the Attorney General’s recusal; to the attempted use of official power to limit the scope of the investigation; to direct and indirect contacts with witnesses with the potential to influence their testimony.”

But before the evidence, the punt: “[W]e determined not to make a traditional prosecutorial judgment. The Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) has issued an opinion finding that ‘the indictment or criminal prosecution of a sitting President would impermissibly undermine the capacity of the executive branch to perform its constitutionally assigned functions’ in violation of ‘the constitutional separation of powers.'”

Translation: Anyone else who did what Donald Trump did would find himself buried under obstruction of justice charges. But Donald Trump is the President of the United States.

The difference between Comey’s treatment of Clinton and Mueller’s treatment of Trump is that Clinton’s immunity to laws meant for mere mortals was unofficial — based on her prominence as a ranking member of the political class — while Trump’s similar immunity is a formal function of his holding a particular office.

Did Trump “obstruct justice?” I’m no lawyer, but Mueller’s report indicates that Trump abused his power to attempt to impede the investigation. That sounds like obstruction to me.

Does it matter that the investigators found no underlying crime after overcoming the obstructions? Some people think so. I don’t.

If you were accused of a “missing body” murder you didn’t commit, and asked someone to give you a false alibi (because you were actually in bed with someone other than your spouse and didn’t want THAT known), or gave a false tip to the police, you’d face charges independent of the underlying crime even if the supposed victim turned up alive.

Why? Because (in theory at least) a criminal investigation pursues the truth of the matter, not just a particular suspect or verdict.

Trump’s conduct was aimed at frustrating that pursuit of truth. Immune or not, that’s wrong.

    A Conversation with Julia Brownley

Congresswoman Julia Brownley speaks to Port Hueneme residents on very important local and national issues. Thanks to her for making the time to reach out to us and listening to what our major concerns are and let us know what she is doing for us. I also hope our local, county and state representatives will follow Congresswoman Brownley’s lead. That is to take the opportunity that has been extended to them to also take time to communicate with those of us who vote. We need to know how our concerns will be addressed and what plans they have to improve our quality of life

Trump Praises Off-Duty Border Patrol Agent Who Engaged Synagogue Shooter

    Virginia Kruta, Associated Editor

President Donald Trump praised an off-duty Border Patrol agent for acting quickly and engaging the shooter Saturday as he fled the scene after opening fire on congregants at Chabad of Poway Synagogue near San Diego

“Sincerest THANK YOU to our great Border Patrol Agent who stopped the shooter at the Synagogue in Poway, California. He may have been off duty but his talents for Law Enforcement weren’t!” he tweeted

    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1122270956192272385?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1122270956192272385&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2019%2F04%2F27%2Ftrump-off-duty-cbp-agent-synagogue-shooter%2F

The CPB agent missed the suspect but struck his vehicle. (RELATED: One Dead, Several Injured In Shooting At San Diego Synagogue)

But as the congregants were still inside the synagogue, Rabbi Goldstein continued his sermon — which was supposed to last all day and end with a Passover meal — in spite of the fact that he himself had been wounded, and according to one witness, “had lost two fingers.”

    WATCH:

One was reported killed and three wounded in the shooting, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Saturday marked the final night of Passover.

Fillmore | Suspect arrested for kidnapping/threat to kill a woman

Ventura County Sheriff Department – Incident Press Release

A suspect has been arrested after kidnapping and threatening to kill a woman.

    Isaias Arana

On the evening of April 24th, at approximately 7:52 pm, patrol deputies from the Sheriff’s Fillmore Patrol Station responded to a report of shots fired at a residence in the 100 Block of South Hopper Canyon Road, in the unincorporated area east of Fillmore. Upon arrival, deputies learned that 24 year old San Fernando resident, Isaias Arana had come to the residence in an attempt to contact a female victim in violation of a restraining order. After being denied entry into the home, Arana used a pistol to shoot several bullets through the front door and a window while the victims were inside.

As Arana entered the residence through a broken window, one of the adult victims was able to flee the residence with a child through a back door. Once inside, Arana threatened to kill the other two female victims and forced them into another room at gunpoint. Soon after, one of those victims was able to successfully flee the residence.

When deputies arrived, the reporting parties believed that Arana and the final victim may still be inside the residence. Therefore, the Sheriff’s SWAT Team was activated and responded to the location believing Arana was armed and barricaded inside the residence with the final victim.

Further investigation determined that Arana had forced the victim out of the residence at gunpoint prior to the deputies’ arrival. Arana then drove the victim to the San Fernando Valley where he picked up a male acquaintance. After driving to the Pacoima area, the male acquaintance engaged in a physical altercation with Arana in an attempt to disarm him. The female victim used this opportunity to flee. Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the location reference the physical disturbance and contacted the two men. Arana was subsequently arrested and the firearm was recovered.

Arana was transported to the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility where he was booked for 664/187(a) PC – Attempted Murder, 207 PC – Kidnapping, 422 PC – Criminal Threats and 273.6 PC – Violation of a Domestic Violence Restraining Order. Arana is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on April 29, 2019. His bail has been set at $1,000,000.00.

Anyone with additional information related to this investigation is encouraged to contact Detective Frances Saleh at (805) 384-4729, or by email at [email protected].
