Nearly a Dozen Seniors to Compete in the First

WHAT:          Who says science fairs are just for the kids? A group of seniors have been running experiments for weeks, and they’re now ready to present their findings in a science fair competition like you’ve ever seen before. The “scientists” are all over the age of 65. Their projects range from The Health Benefits of the Sun to the production of a portable Wii™ Bowling station. Recipe of the Week | Creamy Avocado-Cilantro Pasta Salad

    0
Creamy Avocado-Cilantro Salad | Photo Credit Randolph Graham

This vegan dish benefits from the combination of ripe avocado and fresh cilantro. The avocado gives it a creamy flavor. The cilantro provides an herbal back-beat (my apologies for mixing metaphors). If you are not a fan of cilantro, substitute Italian parsley.

This recipe doubles with no problem so it is perfect for sharing with friends and family as a side dish at pot luck gatherings. This also makes a colorful and tasty lunch when served with thick slices of fresh yellow and red tomatoes.

    Ingredients:

    3 cups shell pasta (Conchiglie)

    1 ripe medium avocado

    ¼ cup cilantro (chopped fine)

1 ½ tablespoons fresh lime juice

    3 tablespoons Vegenaise

    1 teaspoon garlic (minced)

    Salt and pepper to taste

    Additional cilantro for garnish

    Directions:

Boil pasta according to package directions (about 10 minutes) or until just tender (al dente). Drain, rinse well in cold water and set aside.

Slice avocado in half. Remove the pit and peel the avocado. Put in food processor together with cilantro, lime juice, Vegenaise and garlic. Blend it until it’s creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste. Transfer the avocado mixture to a large bowl. Add cooked pasta and toss well. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving.

To serve, transfer salad to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped cilantro.

Candace Owens Gets Heated After Ted Lieu Plays A Clip Of Her Hitler Comments

    Nick Sherman | Contributor

Conservative commentator Candace Owens appeared Tuesday before a House Judiciary Committee hearing on hate crimes and white nationalism.

During the hearing, Democratic California Rep. Ted Lieu said, “Of all the people the Republicans could’ve selected [for the hearing], they pick Candace Owens. I don’t know Miss Owens; I’m not going to characterize her; I’m going to let her own words talk.”

Lieu then held up a cellphone and played a recording of Candace Owens speaking about Adolf Hitler and nationalism, which surfaced online in February(RELATED: Twitter Suspends Candace Owens – Then Says It Was An ‘Error’ After Backlash)

In the video, Owens can be heard saying, “When we say ‘nationalism,’ the first thing people think about — at least in America — is Hitler. You know, he was a national socialist, but if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK then, fine. The problem is, he had dreams outside of Germany.”

Lieu posed a question to Eileen Hershenov, one of the other people testifying to the committee: “When people try to legitimize Adolf Hitler, does that feed into white nationalist ideology?”

White House Rips California Judge’s Ruling On Asylum

Saagar Enjeti | White House Correspondent

President Donald Trump’s administration slammed a San Francisco-based federal judge’s ruling Tuesday morning that states a policy requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while their claims are adjudicated is not legal.

Trump also tweeted his fury with the decision Monday evening, saying:

    https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1115451908213411845?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1115451908213411845&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fdailycaller.com%2F2019%2F04%2F09%2Fwhite-house-9th-circuit-asylum-ruling-catch-release%2F

Judge Richard Seeborg ruled Monday evening that new regulations developed by the Department of Homeland Security requiring migrants claiming asylum to remain in Mexico is not legal. The ruling was made on the basis that migrants claiming asylum are not receiving the humanitarian protections available under U.S. asylum protocols.  (RELATED: Sanctuary Laws Allowed Illegal Immigrant Who Tried To Kill A Cop Remain In The US, ICE Claims)

DHS developed the “Remain in Mexico” policy to counter current requirements known as “catch and release,” which mandates that U.S. authorities process and then release family units from Central America who are claiming asylum into that country. The families are given court dates years later to adjudicate their asylum claims.

Officials say many migrants eventually have their claims rejected in court and that by the time a final order of deportation is given down from a federal judge, migrants simply do not show up. A senior administration official characterized the loophole as “backdoor illegal immigration.”

Politicians Look to Grab More Money – While Passing on the Costs to You

By Ventura County Taxpayers Association (VCTA)

Another day, another scramble for more tax revenue in California.

Although state budget reserves have grown to a record high of more than $15 billion, according to Ventura County Taxpayers Association (VCTA), new tax proposals keep popping up in Sacramento.

Two proposals to raise existing taxes and expand taxes into new areas illustrate how California’s elected leaders are failing to be honest with voters about the nature of the budget problems facing the state.

The first is SB246 which would impose a severance tax on oil and natural gas production of 10 percent of the average price which equates to a $900 million tax increase on Californians. Those tax dollars would flow directly into the state’s general fund to be used for anything the legislators would like.

The second is the long-anticipated effort to change Prop. 13, the landmark 1978 ballot measure limiting property tax increases to 2 percent a year, so that it no longer applies to commercial and industrial parcels.

Proponents appear to have gathered enough signatures that voters will be asked to consider what’s known as “split roll” in 2020. This has the potential to generate an additional $6 billion to $10 billion a year in new revenue.

Local governments would get 60 percent of this windfall and school districts would get 40 percent. Advocates tout the measure as an easy way to fund new and improved city services and to boost school quality.

Both of these efforts are shrouded by smokescreens that obscure key facts.

In the case of the oil severance tax, proponents carefully obscure the fact that the severance tax would reduce local tax revenue in oil-producing counties such as Ventura, making it harder to fund local services.

The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office warned of this consequence of the oil severance tax.

California is one of the only states to base property taxes on the value of undeveloped oil reserves in the ground.  Because the tax increase would make producing oil and gas in some areas less economical, it would reduce the value of oil in the ground, resulting in lower property taxes on those oil reserves.

This would be a significant potential hit to Ventura County.  Currently, the local oil and gas industry provides $21 million in tax revenue to local jurisdictions, and they have historically been one of the top four or five property tax payers in the county.

The state would get all the benefit of an oil severance tax while Ventura County governments would be left holding the bill.

The case for “split roll” is built on the myth that California is undertaxed compared with other states.  However, California is among the top ten states with the highest tax burden according to the non-partisan Tax Foundation.  California also has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the nation.

Prop 13 was passed in response to voter anger over past rapid increases in property taxes.  The effort to undermine Prop 13 is a transparent attempt by big-spending politicians and their allies to free themselves of the restriction placed on them by voters.

The common thread uniting both of these proposals is politicians looking to grab more money to spend while passing on the costs to you, the California taxpayer.

With the state reporting large reserves and cash surpluses, we do not need additional taxes. The answer is more accountability for how our tax dollars are spent.

We need answers on how, with all this money to spend, state services are so poor and our infrastructure is aging and outdated.  Voters should be pressing for this increased accountability rather than handing politicians yet another blank check.

The Ventura County Taxpayer Association is made up people who recognize the importance of government to our communities. Government should be efficient, effective and always transparent. If you would like to support our efforts, please click here to go to our website and join us . Thank you.

    L. Neil Smith’s THE LIBERTARIAN ENTERPRISE | Instead Of An Article

    0

    By L. Neil Smith

I had originally planned to spend the back end of this week writing a whizz-bang piece on one of any number of topics that badly need addressing. Instead, I profligately elected to consume my time and energy writing my current novel, _Rosalie’s World_, a fourth Ngu family story — involving Wilson Ngu, Jasmeen Khalidov Ngu and lovely Tieve Fallon Ngu, also former Olympic champions Morgan Trask and Llyra Ngu Trask and their rapidly growing family — this one about humanity’s first settlement of an extra-solar planet, named after Emerson’s wife, Rosalie Frazier Ngu. I like all these people very much and greatly enjoy spending my days with them. You would, too.

Had I dutifully written an article, the first thing I would have talked about is the so-called “bump stock ban”. A bump stock, in case you don’t know, is an aftermarket accessory which uses recoil energy to  emulate full automatic rates of fire in semiautomatic weapons. I have no personal use for these things — I want real automatic weapons, like the Czech Model 61 Skorpion and the M2 Carbine, completely legalized —  and they are horribly inaccurate.

The pantsless authorities don’t like them, either, and they were apparently used in the Las Vegas mass shooting (we don’t know for sure because there’s been a massive and disgusting cover-up), but no legal authority exists to outlaw them, especially by fiat — just as there was never any legitimate authority to outlaw fully automatic weapons in the first place — and the officials who have done so are criminals and need to be put in jail for at least twenty years.

    Period.

Much the same is true of so-called “red flag laws” which assert a lawful power that the authorities don’t possess to steal legally-owned property — effective firearms — from people they don’t approve of for  one bullshit reason or another. The jackbooted thugs come around and threaten to smash into your house if you don’t abrogate your rights “voluntarily”.

These laws defeat the whole purpose of the Second Amendment. If there had been red flag laws for the Redcoats to rely on, there never would have been an American Revolution, and we’d all still be speaking with a cheesy English accent. The shambling incompetents and drooling morons and moral retards of Congress and the nation’s state legislatures — those who introduce, pass, and enforce these laws — must be made to pay dearly for their encroachments against the Constitution. They are criminal traitors.

There are hundreds of the bastards, if not thousands, and they must all spend the rest of their misbegotten lives in prison. Alcatraz will do.

As long as these fake laws stand, and individuals are persecuted undder them, they are a dangerous and unnecessary threat to Donald Trump’s reelection in 2020. Are you listening, you damned deaf, dumb, blind, and _stupid_ Republicans? Especially here in Colorado? Other felony prosecutions must be carried out — by Peoples’ Grand Juries — under Title 18 of the U.S. Code, Sections 241 and 242: depriving citizens of their rights “under color of law”. Otherwise, recall, impeachment, and boycott (of businesses owned by politicians and of states where they’ve had their evil way) offer remedies.

A third topic I was going to pursue is  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s New Green Deal. Or Green New Deal. Whatever. I was simply going to point out that I once heard Cher (who recently whined something to the effect of, “Why can’t we just outlaw AR-15s?) on a late night talk show, admit that she was a grown woman, and married, before she realized that Mount Rushmore is not a natural phenomenon. And Cher is genius, compared to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The answer to your question, Cher, you ignorant slut, is that AR-15s are the very weapon the Second Amendment was written to protect, the backbone of the Rule of Law,  and your idiotic wish to outlaw them I regard as treasonous and a personal, mortal threat.

I suppose I should discuss the trouble on the Mexican border. It’s very simple: this is our country and we can let in whoever we want and keep out whoever we want. President Trump has the legal right and obligation to do what he proposes — read the goddamned Constitution, you symps. The immigrants’ commitment to actually becoming Americans, to absorb and live by American values, is microscopic. And they’re bringing horrible diseases to us (there’s a bloody typhus epidemic in Los Angeles) that Americans haven’t suffered for 200 years. I reiterate my call for a fleet of A-10 Warthogs patrolling along the border. I wanna see those thirty millimeters roll. Are you listening, Martha?

Finally, the less I say about the Jussie Smollett case, and its repulsive little weasel of a perpetrator, the better. You have forced me to side with the Chicago cops, you schmuck, and as a veteran of 1968, that makes me want to vomit.

    Hold still.

Advance Healthcare Planning for Foodies: Learn about Advance Directives While Enjoying Gourmet Food at Free CMHS Event

(Ventura, California) The public is invited to come and learn about the importance of advance directives for future healthcare while sampling local gourmet food at a free event hosted by Community Memorial Healthcare System.

The event, called “Advance Care Planning for Foodies,” takes place at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday April 17, at the Museum of Ventura County, 100 E. Main St. The free event is part of CMHS’ 2019 Ethics in Healthcare speaker series. Dr. James Hornstein will serve as the moderator and answer questions. In addition, professionals will be there to help guests fill out forms and provide additional information. Gourmet food will include hors d’oeuvres and a dessert bar.

Advance directives might not be a fun or comfortable topic of conversation, but your future healthcare plans and wishes should be discussed with loved ones, especially as you age. Advance directives are documents that tell others how you want medical decisions to be made for your care if you can’t speak for yourself. They allow you to give your instructions in cases when you may be unconscious, in a vegetative state or impaired by dementia or other health conditions. These legal documents tell your family, friends, and healthcare providers what kind of care you want, what you don’t want, and whom you would like to make healthcare decisions for you if needed.

The April 17 event in Ventura is free but reservations are required. For reservations, visit www.cmhshealth.org/rsvp or call Brown Paper Tickets at 800-838-3006.

Fillmore | Teacher’s Aid Arrested – Allegedly sending Inappropriate Social Media Messages to Student

Ventura County Sheriff Department – Incident Press Release

A teacher’s aide from Fillmore High School was arrested for child annoying and contributing to a delinquency of a minor after it was reported that he was sending inappropriate messages to a student on a social media site and providing marijuana products to a minor.

At the end of the school day on 04/05/19, Fillmore Unified School District employees were notified of potentially inappropriate messages shared between a teacher’s aide and a student at the High School. Upon hearing about the allegations, the School District immediately notified the Fillmore Police Department and an investigation ensued.

Deputies responded to the high school to investigate the teacher’s aide, and found he had conversations with a student on the social media application, “Snap Chat.” The dialogue was improper and had sexual overtures. Deputies completed the investigation and concluded the employee, 21 year old Fillmore resident, Ricardo Negrete, was annoying the student by sending multiple messages at various times of the day and night. Additionally, detectives discovered that Negrete sold a marijuana cartridge used in vape pens to a second minor not involved in the aforementioned incident.

Prior to arriving at work on 4/08/19, Negrete was arrested and booked at the Pre-Trail Detention Facility for Penal Code 647.6 (a)(1)- Child Annoying and Penal Code 272 – Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor.

The Fillmore Police Department and the Fillmore Unified School District work together very closely and this cooperative relationship led to the quick identification and arrest of Negrete.
